How to Fix Health Care: Lasik Surgery For The Medical Debate

Make no mistake about it. Health care reform is coming. But what’s the best way to fix our health care system, which is an inefficient, complicated mess of private actors, third-party payers, public subsidies, and innumerable state and federal regulations? Should we place our faith in the government or in the free market? obamacare supporters argue that the answer lies in more government—more subsidies, more regulations, a law mandating individuals buy health-insurance coverage and, of course, more taxes to pay for it all. The alternative is to base reforms on what works in the other five-sixths of the US economy, where choice and competition increase quality and drive down prices over time. Can a market-based health care system work? We can begin to answer this question by looking at Lasik, a medical procedure that’s not covered by health insurance. And has gotten better—and cheaper—over time. “How to Fix Health Care” proposes three simple reforms that will put us on a path to a health-care system that’s better, more affordable, and more accessible. And get this—these market-based reforms can be implemented without creating new government programs or raising taxes. Approximately 8.30 minutes. Produced by Paul Feine and Meredith Bragg. Hosted by Nick Gillespie. For downloadable versions of this and other videos, go to reason.tv

LASIK 3D Medical Animation

rufusrajadurai.wetpaint.com LASIK or Laser-Assisted In Situ Keratomileusis is a surgical procedure intended to reduce a person’s dependency on glasses or contact lenses. LASIK surgery is most commonly performed as a cure for myopia (nearsightedness), but can also be used to cure hyperopia (farsightedness) or astigmatism (corneal irregularities). LASIK is a procedure that permanently changes the shape of the cornea using a special laser and thus focusing the light rays exactly on the retina. The steps of the procedure are as follows: A suction ring is placed on the eye to stabilize and check the eye pressure. The microkeratome, a cutting instrument, is attached to the suction ring. The blade of the microkeratome is used to cut a flap in the cornea. The exposed inner layer of the cornea is then reshaped with an excimer laser. The corneal flap is returned to its original position. LASIK is an ambulatory procedure; the patient can walk into the surgery center, have the procedure and walk out again and is awake the whole time. Occasionally, the doctor may administer a mild oral sedative.

When the operative field is numb, the doctor will use an automated microsurgical instrument called a microkeratome.Malpractice Medical
This tiny instrument will carefully create a thin corneal flap …
which remains hinged to the eye.
Underneath this flap the inner layer of the cornea, called the stroma, is exposed.
Next, your doctor will use a computer to control pulses of cool laser light. These pulses will delicately remove microscopically thin layers of cells from the stroma, Malpractice Medical
By removing tissue in this manner, your doctor will tailor the new shape of your cornea according to the exact nature of your vision problem. The entire procedure usually takes about 5 minutes and is painless.
The corneal flap is then closed and the surface is rinsed.
Following surgery, you’ll be given protective contact lenses to wear for a few days while the corneal flap heals.

Lasik Eye Surgery in 6 Minutes

This is the Science Friday (National Public Radio) video about LASIK eye surgery. The funny thing about this video is that the narrator, who is probably also the producer, is a lot more nervous about LASIK laser vision correction than the patient himself. He is cool as a cucumber, I had LASIK myself, didn’t think it was a big deal and now I see fantastic. The video features Steven Vale, M.D., medical director of Acuity Laser Eye & Vision Center in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. Dr. Vale is one of the most well-respected and experienced Lasik surgeons in the world. Dr. Vale has performed over 21,000 laser vision correction surgeries. Dr. Vale’s ability and experience really comes out in this otherwise realistic and detailed glimpse at the world of laser vision correction surgery.
