LASIK report on ABC Good Morning America 2/25/2010

Former FDA Regulator Says LASIK Side Effects Weren’t Taken Seriously Enough. Excerpt: “But while the FDA was aware of negative side effects that would occur in some, Morris Waxler, the former head of the FDA branch responsible for reviewing the data on LASIK, told ABC News in his first television interview that, in hindsight, those side effects were not taken seriously enough… “I wouldn’t say it was pooh-poohed so much it was just sort of shoved aside as the kind of, we, we don’t know what to do with that data,” he said. “It’s right there in the record. The agencies and the refractive surgeons, people know these problems occur and there doesn’t seem to be a plan to handle some of the more difficult problems that are created.”

I love how this asshole wears glasses… if he believes in his precious Lasik so much why doesn’t he have it done himself? Oh yea that’s right…

    Thanks for posting this.

Personally, I just can’t buy into Lasik. When someone is blasting a laser beam in your eye, there isn’t really a lot of room for “whoops!”…

I’ll stick with contacts, as I have for 20 years now, keeping the cases cleaned and the lenses replaced. I prefer my optic nerves unsinged.

Sorry to hear neither of these things helped for you. Dry eye pain is really horrible. On my LASIK surgeon and warnings – I don’t remember specifically about the tear duct plugs, but I was warned about dry eyes, halos, shadowing. I just thought it wouldn’t happen to me. I also was given a lengthy sheet of possible side effects which was so long that the amount of information was overwhelming. But I don’t remember seeing percentages on how often these side effects occur -would have been useful.

@flumpo2: Did your LASIK surgeon warn you that you might need to have your tear ducts plugged and take expensive flax seed oil for dry eye pain? I tried those remedies, and more, but got no relief.

Ask about tear duct plugs for 2 of the 4 tear ducts in your eyes to keep what moisture you do produce in your eyes longer. And for dry eye pain I take 1 tablespoon of flax seed oil a day with v-8 or tomato juice. Barleans highest lignon flax seed oil works best for me. After 2 weeks really cuts down on eye pain–almost gone.

Read the original interview with Morris Waxler, former FDA branch chief. Google “Former FDA Official Says FDA “Screwed Up” In Approving LASIK”. You’ll find it on lasiknewswire(dot)com.

Yeah, I too was told I was a “success” by the LASIK surgeon and staff, yet I see double vision, halos and starbursts every night since, and have headaches and dry eye pain daily. Is that a success???? Am I missing something???

LASIK is a huge money making business. The other thing is since it’s a relatively new procedure, no one knows what the long term is like.

  9. LASIKComplications Says:

“95% of LASIK patients are satisfied” is nothing more than a deceptive soundbite which originated from deep inside the LASIK industry money machine. Google “the truth behind LASIK satisfaction” or search for it on lasiknewswire(.)com. Learn more about the LASIK scam at my website which can be found on my channel.
