Slit Lamp Techniques – Smoothing a Small Gap

This video shows a small gap or gutter from the 5-7 o’clock position. Utilizing the base of a wet merocel it is easily closed. While perhaps not responsible for a line of best corrected vision, it may lead to improved visual quality / contrast sensitivity, etc. When this technique is not utilized, the gutter will quickly fill in with epithelium. This may not create an appearance of striae but may be responsible for the “edematous (peau de orange/beaten metal) appearance” sometimes seen in the early post-op period. Mabel-PRK Right eye 10 yrs ago for -11 D, Staar Visian ICL for -16D 4 months ago

Mabel was highly myopic but had a thin cornea so we could not do LASIK. we did a PRK with the Visx laser and she did very well. Her left eye progressed to -16 D and when she became stable we inserted a Staar Visian ICL phakic implant 4 months ago and now she has uncorrected vision of 20/25 in each eye and is very secure with her improved vision
