For people with myopic eyesight, the mere prospect of having a perfect vision is certainly a dream come true. People with short sightedness problems would have probably at some time or other wondered about the benefits of having a lasik laser eye surgery to correct their vision.
Since the advent of lasik laser eye surgery, this dream is now a reality for millions of people all over the developed world. This article raises some dangers and side effects of this surgical procedure.
In the original version of the laser eye surgical procedure, the PRK, which is an acronym for photorefractive keratectomy, involves the complete removal of the cornea’s outer layer to operate underneath it and later let it to grow back on its own.
However, with the lasik surgical procedure or laser in situ keratomileusis, eye surgeons can now peel back the cornea surface to operate underneath it and then return the cornea to its original position.
Now, the bad news about the surgery is that there can be some side effects and complications just like in any other surgeries. Some people who have had lasik eye surgery done have found that not only did their vision had not improved, but are seriously damaged by the eye surgery.
The surgery permanently changes the physiology and optics of the eyes. Therefore potential eye surgery patients should always be aware of the risk-benefit ratio and whether is it worth to risk the dangers and side effects to the eyes. The benefits are that you can do away with glasses or contact lenses, probably permanently. However, the risk of permanent damage to your vision can be palpable and alarming.
In a ‘Review of Optometry’ report, up to one in six patients who undergo lasik laser eye surgery end up with complications and side effects. This ratio is indeed alarming.
Complications and side effects arising from the lasik eye surgery include distortion of vision, such as irregular astigmatism, which cannot be corrected by eye glasses. Others experienced deterioration in the quality of their vision or very bad dry-eye side effects. Some very unfortunate patients have reported having double vision or even triple vision arising from a lasik laser eye surgery.
For patients who do not suffer any side effects, it is certainly an undoubted positive life changing experience. For example, Richard Branson of the Virgin fame or notoriety, is a huge fan of lasik laser eye surgery as the surgery has transformed him from being ‘blind as a bat’ to having an almost perfect vision. Till this day, he is still gushing praises on lasik laser eye surgery.
However, on the other hand, Margaret Dolan from Ireland is a victim of the surgical procedure went wrong. After her surgery, her eyes developed a complication known as Post-Lasik Dry Eye.
Margaret Dolan needs to add artificial tears to her eyes many times a day and throughout the night just to keep the eyes moist. Patients who suffer from this dry eye syndrome usually have the symptoms for about two to three months after their surgeries and then the symptoms will disappear.
However, for some very unfortunate people, their conditions do not improve with time and they need to drop artificial tears on their eyes for the rest of their lives. This can be very frustrating and distressing for the unfortunate victims.
So if you are considering a lasik laser eye surgery, do discuss the possible risks and complications that may arise from of the surgical procedure thoroughly with your eye surgeon and get as much information as you can before you reach a decision.

So I’ve heard of lasik eye surgery for fixing your vision. I’m wondering because my mom told me that after you lasik eye surgery, and you don’t protect your eyes you will still need to go back to wearing glasses. Is that true?also do you have to pay for the surgery? Some of my friends got lasik eye surgery and they say is safe but some people say its not safe. so is its safe or not?How long does it take to fix your vision during the lasik eye surgery and where do you take the surgery? you can give me other informations i don’t know about lasik eye surgery. thank you
P.S is wearing contact lens good or bad? because my friend say that once they wear it, it’s hard for them to take it off.
(maybe glasses is safer than contact lens or lasik eye surgery. or not)
also my vision problem is myopia and I wear glasses.
I don’t know whether myopia can be fixed by lasik or not…
I got lasik surgery about 6 years ago. I didn’t go to one of the cheapo places either. Don’t go cheap, these are your eyes we’re talking about.
The eye correction lasts approximately 10-15 years. Afterwards, you can either get it done again, or go to glasses/contacts. As for the duration of the surgery itself… maybe 5-10 minutes per eye. Not long at all. They give you some med to sleep when you get home, to give your eyes time to heal. But your vision is fixed as soon as they turn the machine off.
About contacts, sometimes it can be difficult to take them off. Depends on if your eyes get dried out or not. Though of course there are re-wetting drops.

I’ve been considering Lasik eye surgery for years. At one point I even had a consultation and appointment to have it done, but backed out. I would really like to consider it again, but I’d like to hear from people that have had it done or know people who have had the procedure.
I have astigmatism in only one eye, my prescription is like 2 something…if that information helps.
Oh, yes, the age factor. I’m currently 26.
Lasik eye surgery is rather safe if only you are a suitable candidate. As with any surgery, there is a definite risk incurred. You must be screened for suitability and examined by the doctor personally. (Not the sales team to mislead you to get expensive package deal).
If you are a suitable candidate, the risk maybe :-
1.)Dry eyes (temporary)
2.)Regression/ enhancement
3.)infection (3-5/20,000 for the next 3 weeks)
4.)Flap/ complication of treatment (rare)
5.)Miscellaneous
A suitable candidate for Lasik surgery, it depends on:-
1.)Your corneal thickness
2.)Your power
3.)Your age
4.)A centre with a doctor who is examining your eyes personally
5.)Torough explanation to suit your lifestyle
Always insist on seeing the doctor performing the surgery for you. It is the due deligent of him or her to present the risk and benefit to you in detail personally.

I am considering Lasik eye surgery but curious on how it all works. I was told I’d need to be without contacts for 2 weeks before the surgery to rest my eyes. I am at -10.00 at the moment ( yes I know I’m blind! ) I have trouble wearing my glasses, it makes me a bit dizzy. I have been training myself to get use to it but it still gets me nauseated. How many days would I be off from work? I’d appreciate any information any has about Lasik Surgery. Thanks ahead of time!!!!
i recently accompanied a friend of mine to get laser eye surgery at a clinic out of town. he assumed he’d need help afterwards because he’d be incapacitated. he was wrong.
immediately after the procedure, they put transparent shields over his eyes (like clear eye patches) so he wouldn’t touch his eyes for the next 12 hours. he was still able to see, although a bit blurrily.
the only real help he needed was walking back to the hotel, and for a series of eyedrops a couple hours later. he could see normally after about five hours. sunglasses were necessary for him because of slight sensitivity to bright light for the first two days.
he’s been happy as a clam ever since.
============
i’d say give yourself 2 to 3 days off for the surgery and recovery.
although it may be a pain to live without contacts for two weeks before the surgery, it’s necessary for your cornea to "refresh" its surface, and for your sight to adjust to a more natural state, and a more accurate reading of your true prescription and what degree of correction is necessary

How old do you have to be? What other alternatives are there, besides glasses, contacts, and lasik eye surgery? I’d like something permanant. How long does it take for it to heal? Are there serious risks during the procedure? If I can’t get lasik eye surgery done, what’s the problem? Sorry about all the questions, feel free to give me as much information as you can because I’m pretty sure I’m missing something that I’ll want to know later . .
Sure.
Lasik works for most healthy people with healthy eyes who need total corrections less than about 3 or 4 diopters. It has to do with the shape of the eye and the thickness of the cornea.
You really should wait to have the proceedure until you have stopped growing and until your corrective prescriptive lenses have been the same for a year. When you are older, you will probably go 3 or 6 years without changing your prescription. You will not want to risk complications by having a lasik revision frequently while you are young.
The cornea is sliced with a micro thin blade (micro karatome) and flipped up. The lazer contours the freshly exposed inside tissue of the cornea and corrects the vision. The flap is then closed.
The corneal flap makes a bandage and the whole thing heals pretty quickly.
There are risks. Infection, halos in the night vision are the ones that come to mind.
You need to see two or three doctors, in my opinion. The consultations take about an hour. The consultations are free or about 50 dollars.
Lasik will not work if the astigmatism is very severe. My correction was more than 4.75 diopters and would have required PRK.
PRK requires the lazering off the front of the cornea and takes 2-3 weeks of rest and no work to heal.
My brother had PRK and needed 16 days. My sister had lasik and was back to work in three day. Both are happy and generally do not need any glasses.
See the doctors. Google LASIK and read about twenty sites.
God Bless you.
