LASIK Surgery Question: Is it Necessary to get the FREE lifetime consultation?

The Lasik doctor I know says that one year should be enough for a Free lifetime consultation because of the ever-changing technology. With Lifetime consultation after the surgery, the doctor will probably start charging the patient when the technology used with the patient is no longer available.

the current treatment should be enough..

Why The Cost Of Your LASIK Surgery Can Spiral Out Of Control!

The cost of Lasik eye surgery is difficult to estimate in general terms because of the difference in prices charged by varying providers. It’s also dependant on each respective patients various needs with requirements differing from person to person.

The introduction of new technologies and procedures have resulted in a steady rise in the average cost of a lasik operation. Prices have risen between 30-40% in the last five years and by the end of 2006, the average cost of lasik per eye was about $2000.

Be Wary Of Advertised Specials

A trap for new players is falling for advertised lasik specials which can be rather misleading. Being drawn to a procedure being advertised for between $500-1000 is one thing and obviously very tempting however, keep in mind many people won’t qualify for the advertised price. If they do, then it’s quite likely extra work is required which will include several follow up visits and extra cost.

It’s important to read the fine print and ask the right questions before committing to lasik eye surgery. The average cost of lasik usually revolves around the cost per eye and if a procedure is being advertised for under a thousand dollars it’s more than likely for one eye.

Qusestions You Need To Ask Before Committing To Lasik Eye Surgery

Several factors contribute to the cost of Lasik a operation. These include such things as overheads including surgical equipment, surgery location and consultation fees. If you are considering Lasik then consider asking the following questions when you meet with your surgeon.

- Always ask for a clear explanation of what is included in the cost of lasik surgery. Factors such as initial evaluation and examination may seem straight forward procedures at the beginning but in many cases, you will be charged for these which is understandable but, find out exactly how much you’re paying.

- In many instances, other doctors will be asked to review your situation but most people don’t take into account their time is included in the fee.

- As much as you need to know what’s included, you also need clear guidelines as to what is not included. This will save any arguments when it comes to paying the bill!

- Ask your doctor the risks involved. Be clear on this. While lasik eye surgery is reasonably safe, any complications which do arise will need to be treated and therefore can “blow out” the original quote.

- Be clear with your doctor on the amount of follow up required. Will you need medication and if so, how expensive is it?

Several factors contribute to the average cost of Lasik surgery. The procedure is one thing but think of it a little like an assembly line. By the time the finished product reaches the showroom, a variety of input has gone into the end product all contributing to the success of the project and all contributing to the cost. It’s your hip pocket so be sure to go in “with eyes wide Open.”

Going for Lasik consultation next weekend, what should I ask?

Anyone have Lasik done before? Experience?

The answerer had some good ideas. This was my experience….

I was about 20/250 before Lasik surgery last year. The procedure was painless, probably due to the Valium they gave me. The ride home (as a passenger, of course) was fairly uncomfortable, mainly due to light sensitivity. The doctor gave me dark goggles, but the light was still too bright. I was in some pain once I got home (maybe 3 hours post procedure), but I had some left over Vicodin, and took two doses of that. The Vicodin took the edge off. Slept fine that night. Woke up the next morning, and I COULD SEE FINE! Hallelujah! I was jazzed up about that. I drove myself to my one day check up (an 2 hour round trip) with no problems. For that check up, I was seeing at 20/25, less than 24 hours after the surgery. I went to work that afternoon (doing ultrasound which really requires you to use your eyes). For my one week check up, I was seeing between 20/20 and 20/15. Other than the touch of pain I had post procedure, before I went to bed for the night, I had no other problems. I would do it again in a heartbeat! No more glasses, no more contacts, no more cleaning solutions and saline!

My advice would be to talk to everyone….talk to your family, friends and co-workers. Then ask your family, friends and co-workers to talk to their family, friends and co-workers….you get the idea. I found my surgeon by word of mouth. I asked everyone I know if they had Lasiks (or knew anyone who had Lasiks), and what doctor they went to. Almost everyone I talked to in my area went to the surgeon I ended up going to, and everyone was perfectly satisfied. I went into the procedure very confident!

Just one other thing….I went to a doctor who used computerized, laser equipment. No knives were involved. But, it cost me a pretty penny. I paid $5500 for both eyes, but I was not comfortable going to a doctor that advertised in the newspaper for $500 per eye. Sometimes you get what you pay for! Good luck to you!

what is done during a LASIK surgery consultation?

I am thinking about getting LASIK and have scheduled a consultation. What should I expect?

They are going to if you are a good candidate for LASIK…not everyone is.

They are going to give you an standard eye exam (How is your eyesight ?!)
They are going to measure your retinas (Thick enough?)
They are going test the SHAPE of your eyes and other tests (Weird machines!)
They want to know about your general health (Good? Bad?)
They want to know if you can afford it !!!
If you are a canadate they want to "lock you in" by making an appointment for you for surgery within a week or so !

The consultation is sometimes FREE ! (They make their $$$ on the procedure)
They SHOULD be profesional and frienldly and answer ALL of your questions!

Why do you have to leave out your contacts a week before a lasik consultation?

I ask this because I was told this today by a doctor since im going in next week. I have had them in for a couple hours today. I will probably put them in for a couple hours over the next few days. How will this affect the test? I may have to reschedule. I cannot run with my glasses

You should stop wearing your lenses, because they affect the shape of the cornea. This may affect the accuracy of the measurements of your eyes before surgery and could consequently lead to inaccurate results.

Can I go back to work after lasik eye consultation?

I have an appointment for lasik eye consultation. I understand they’re going to dialate my pupils but will I be able to go back to work the same day? Has anyone had this done before? Please share your experience. I’m trying to decide if I need to take half the day off work. Thanks.

The dilating and measuring is not much different from a routine (yearly) visit. If you normally need a ride home, you probably want to ask someone to go with.

If you work in a place that uses your vision a lot- if you’re at a computer or if you read a lot – you’ll be good for nothing the rest of the day. lol. It always takes me a few hours for everything to go back to normal.

I had lasik surgery a few years back. Shoot me an email if you have questions…good luck!

Considering a lasik consultation: do I need to bring anything?

I’m 20, and my dad surely won’t let me get a free consultation for lasik so I’ve decided to go down and get one by myself…but do I need to bring anything specific?

Yes. Your prescription might help. And your prescription should be stable for at least two years (this means its not changed over the past two years) for you to even qualify for surgery. I’m not sure about yours but at 23 my eyes have still not stabalised so I personally don’t qualify.

Attending A Lasik Institute

If you are thinking about Lasik eye surgery or if you are thinking about pursuing a career as a Lasik eye surgeon, you should consult a Lasik institute for all of your informational needs. Most institutes have a lot of information on the process so that you can become more informed about the process as a whole and start to consider your options.

As you become familiar with your options, the Lasik institute near you can also assist you in finding some local areas that can help provide you with some of the more specific information to your situation and enhance your understanding of the procedure as a whole which will enable you to make better decisions.

If you are considering pursuing a career as a Lasik eye surgeon, you will need to learn a little bit more about the Lasik procedure. Attending a Lasik institute can help you as you may be able to shadow a doctor as he or she makes the rounds and consults with people about the procedure.

If you are a trained physician, some institutes offer workshops about the procedure to further enlighten physicians as to the specifics of Lasik eye surgery. It is recommended that you book an appointment or consultation for more information if this is something you are interested in as most clinics and institutes are indeed very busy.

Checking In For Surgery

The Lasik institute is also where patients go for the procedure. If you are getting a Lasik eye surgery procedure, you will have consulted your doctor for all of the particulars in their private facilities. After this, you will go for your appointment at the Lasik institute.

Your first appointment may end up being a consultation in which they will ask you a series of questions. You will be asked about your medical history and you will have some optical tests to determine which form of Lasik eye surgery is best for you in this particular instance. After the tests are completed, you will be scheduled for another appointment in which the procedure will take place.

Once you are booked for the surgery, you will need to arrange a companion to help you out with your transportation home. You will not be able to drive, so you should either arrange for someone you trust to drive you or arrange a cab service to pick you up.

You may need some assistance getting into your home as well, so be sure to arrange for that as well with your options. A Lasik institute may be able to assist you with arranging this transportation if you cannot arrange it yourself.
