My eyes are pretty bad. I have about the limit as far as an astigmatism correction with LASIK goes. I have a LASIK consultation this coming Thursday. Still, I am really scared about having the procedure after reading a few articles, but my eyes are bad enough to prevent me from getting some jobs *with* correction.

Should I go through with it? Are those gloom and doom articles exaggerating?
Example of a gloom and doom article/site:
http://lasikdisaster.com/

Yes, this site is likely biased.

I’m sure it’s worth it, to be able to see well again.
But the feeling in your eye’ll be..ugh.
Try staring (not really) into a Wii-mote, and imagine the after effect about…10 times worse for awhile.

Though LASIK surgery is a relatively simple procedure, you should still take special care when considering it. After all, a poorly performed surgery will affect your vision for the rest of your life. One of the most important things that you can do when considering LASIK surgery is to carefully choose your surgeon.

So how do you go about finding a good LASIK surgeon? Most likely you will have seen many advertisements announcing the now widely available procedure. And with the surgery being so widely available, you may have noticed that many are performing the procedure at really attractive rates.

However, while many of these practices may be competent, choosing your LASIK surgeon based purely on an advertisement is not a wise decision. Sure, advertisements can be good starting points, but there are other things that should be considered also.

One thing to consider is if your potential surgeon is associated with an academic medical center. Practitioners that are associated with medical centers are more likely to be abreast of current information and technology. If possible, you should choose a surgeon who is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, as their standards for acceptance are pretty rigid.

Another avenue for helping you choose a LASIK surgeon is a referral from your regular optometrist or ophthalmologist. Still another resource for helping you to locate a LASIK surgeon is the Academy of Ophthalmology’s website at www.aao.org using the “Find an Eye M.D.” feature. Choose refractive surgery under specialty. You may also call refractive surgery centers in your area.

After you have settled on a potential surgeon, you need to make an appointment for a consultation. Ask any questions that you may have concerning the surgery – it helps to take along a list. If you are having problems thinking of questions, you can visit The Council for refractive Surgery Quality Assurance’s website to get an idea of what you should be asking.

You should also choose a surgeon who is competent in the different areas of refractive surgery, such as LASIK, LASEK, PRK, CK, and clear lens replacement. He should also be informed of the latest technologies in refractive surgery. A surgeon who is competent in all areas of refractive surgery will be able to make the best recommendation for correcting your vision.

Just as you might when considering any other surgical procedure, feel free to consult with several surgeons before making your final decision. It is also important that you are comfortable with your LASIK surgeon and trust that he is competent. You should never feel obligated or pressured to choose a particular surgeon. Be sure to base your preference for a LASIK surgeon on what is best for you and your health.

I went in for my consultation for Lasik, and the doctor said before I have Lasik I need to add these drops to my eyes frequently for about 2 weeks because my right eye is dry. Then I will come back and see if they got better, and then that’s when they will schedule me for the surgery. I’m scared to get it done now because of the stories I’ve been hearing about severe dry eye after Lasik.

I would be cautious in regard to having LASIK done if you have chronic dry eye now without having had LASIK. Post op dryness can be a particularly frustrating and even debilitating consequence of LASIK. This can even happen with people who have had no problems with dryness before LASIK. The chances of you having significant dryness issues after LASIK are MUCH higher if you already are having some dryness now. There are ways to manage post op dryness but in some patients these management options are not very succesful. The GREAT majority of my LASIK patients are VERY happy with their results. I will tell you though that the very few patients who have long term chronic post op dryness are VERY unhappy patients. So just go into this with your eyes open (figuratively speaking) and realize that you definitely have a higher risk of unmanageable dryness because of your current dryness.

LASIK stands for Laser in Situ Keratomileusis. It is a type of surgical procedure to reshape the cornea with laser. It is used to correct myopia, astigmatism, and hyperopia. Keep in mind that LASIK doesn’t work for everyone, but for those for which it works, LASIK has been able to actually correct one’s eyesight. Imagine being able to get up in the morning and just being able to see the world, without glasses or contacts.

Benefits Of LASIK

The benefits to LASIK are priceless. Not only will you be able to see clearly without putting anything on, but you won’t have to spend a dime on glasses and contact lenses. Sports like swimming and diving can be done without the aid of special goggles. You no longer have to worry about losing your eye gear, and most significantly, when you get up in the morning you will simply be able to see.

Unfortunately, LASIK is not for everyone. First of all, there are certain types and kinds of eye disorders that LASIK cannot fix. An eye doctor is needed to make sure that your type of eyesight problem can be fixed by LASIK. Also, you need to be sure that your eyesight has stopped changing. If you get LASIK and your eyesight continues to worsen, you will end up having to rely on glasses and contacts again. It should be noted also that LASIK is not recommended for children.

How Does LASIK Work?

A laser is exposed to a person’s eyes to correct the vision for him/her. First, a knife called a microkeratome cuts a flap in the cornea and the stroma, the middle part of the cornea, is exposed. The laser is then exposed to the eye to destroy some of the stroma and thus changing the overall shape of the cornea. The flap is then replaced and the surgery is over. The degree of correction depends on the degree of the patient’s eyesight.

How To Find The Best LASIK In Town?

Nowadays, there are many LASIK clinics. Almost everyone will claim to offer the most advanced facilities with the best surgeons around. It will seem overwhelming when trying to find out which surgeon to go to, but there are ways to help make the search for a LASIK clinic an easier one.

Probably the best way to find a LASIK center is to find past patients who have had the surgery performed. Are they happy with their surgery? Do they have a certain clinic that they would like to recommend? These testimonials are by far the most excellent way to measure whether the surgery is safe or if the LASIK center has specialists who know what they’re doing. If a past patient is satisfied with the surgical procedure, odds are that you will be too.

Another way to find a LASIK surgeon in a specific area is by using the internet. By doing a search in yellow pages or Google search engine, you will find plenty of LASIK clinics, depending on the area. If you have no recommendation from any past patience and have to find a LASIK surgeon from scratch, the process takes lots of research and questioning. Call the surgeon to set up a consultation session, which is usually free. You will get a better feel for the surgeon when speaking to him/her directly, asking him questions and doubts that you have. A good surgeon will be glad to reply all of your questions and make you feel as tranquil as possible about the coming surgery. There are no questions that should go unanswered. You have to feel as easy as possible leading up to this surgical procedure. By knowing this, you will be able to arrive at a more informed decision about whether or not you want to use the clinic.

Some Final Note About LASIK

Remember that LASIK is not for everyone. There are many LASIK establishments that will provide you with the surgery to correct your eyesight, but there are several conditions that must be met. Note that your eyesight needs to have the right kind of amount of damage done to it for the surgery to be successful. Also, you are going to need to get ready some money, because LASIK is not very cheap.

So, find a LASIK center in your area and get rid of those vision aids once and for all. I’m sure you would prefer to see the world through your own eyes. Once you have the surgery performed, tell others about your successful experience so that they, too, may benefit from the professionals at your local LASIK center.

I already have the money I need to pay for it, so financing is not an issue. My insurance also gives me a nice discount. Once I choose a specialist and have a consultation, how long can I expect to wait before the actual procedure? Is there any hope of meeting my 3-4 month deadline, or is the waiting list for a good specialist going to be too long?

no problem. usually have to be out of contacts 6 weeks or so (varies by doc and type of lens) before the procedure

but no problem on 3 months.

After waiting for another 20-30 minutes, I was finally brought into another room. The doctor started by telling me my corneas were something like -5 and I had a stigmatism of something like 3 in my right eye and 6 in my left and that LASIK and Intralase were probably out.

Then he started telling me about PRK and how that could work around the cornea problem but then he checked the chart again and saw that my pupils weren’t 6.5 mm but rather 8.5 mm and suddenly all bets were off.

I fully plan on getting a 2nd and 3rd opinion before I abandon hope but I admit I walked out soon after writing down the numbers and was wondering if anyone out there can help me out or just tell me to wait like the doctor did.

I’m 23 years old if that helps so maybe technology will catch up…

If I remember correctly, if your corneas are too big noone will be able to do LASIK/PRK on them. The equipment for the surgery is not set up for large corneas/pupils.

Be patient a little longer, hopefully LASIK will be available to those who have bigger corneas than usual.

I had LASIK done in 2000 and its great. I hope one day you can have it too!

A lot of people refuse help from lasik surgery because they are afraid of the complications and the lasik surgery risks involved. The truth about the risks is never as interesting as the fiction about them and would likely not sell as many newspapers.

Learning that a surgical procedure that is cutting edge is generally safe and produces good results is simply not “news” in comparison to having an assortment of alleged failed surgical procedures and a long list of associated lasik surgery risks. This type of publicity generates a lot of negativity towards an industry and a technological advance that is doing lots of positive good in the world.

As with anything in life, the proper preparation and the truth in information will enable you to get to the heart of the matter and solve the issue. With Lasik surgery risks, it pretty much all comes down to preparation. You can avoid any possible risks by knowing what you are getting into and by finding the best doctor for your money.

With this type of complete information, your lasik eye surgery procedure will go as planned and will provide great results that you can be proud of and be confident in. Without any preparation or information, you may be looking at a more complex case.

Discovering the Risks

The confidence in lasik surgery has increased through the years as we begin to learn more about the procedure and more about the possible lasik surgery risks. With this knowledge, we can begin to tweak the procedure and augment some of the problem areas.

As we end up developing the procedure further, we end up reducing a lot of the risk factors and becoming capable of spreading more information to clients on how to reduce these risks with preparation and information. The best way to avoid risks in lasik is to consult with your doctor about your specific case.

Serious complication risk rates in terms of Lasik surgery is now around the one percent mark. Prior to a period of extensive study, the percentage of people that encountered a form of lasik risks was around five percent or less.

With a period of extensive study came trade journals and other aspects that allowed the doctors to communicate with one another about the risks. From this communication came greater responsibility and information that backed up the industry with confidence.

More information on these risks can be found by searching on your favorite search engine. You can also call for a consultation at your local lasik center to further discuss these risks and request more information.

Goodness, thanks guys. I’m asking because when I made the appointment (national company) the appointment setter said that doctors in their different offices give varying requirements on the amount of days to go without the contacts.

Yes it could because contacts tend to change the shape of your eyes very slightly (The change is miniscule, but that’s all it takes to be off on the measurements and make the wrong correction for the lasik surgery). It takes as much as 14 days for your eyes to return to normal shape, if you haven’t worn your contacts during that time.
